Divorce

In the Bible Malachi 2:15-16 says:

"Has not [the LORD] made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. "I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself with violence as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith."  (NIV)

To my mind, this is crystal clear.  God does not want His people to get divorced, though if you are currently in a physically abusive situation, get out of the house and seek help at your local women's shelter!  God's Word makes no provision for a husband to physically injure his wife under any circumstance.

What options are there?

For the unequally yoked couple the Bible is very clear.  1 Corinthians 7:12-13 says,

"To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.  And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him."

Now what do I do?

The best answer I have to offer is one of the simplest to carry out but often the most difficult to do with diligence and faith:

PRAY!

  • Pray that you would be motivated to read God's strengthening Word everyday.
  • Pray that you would be obedient to what Scripture says about divorce.
  • Pray that God would protect your heart and mind from discouragement and frustration in what may seem like a hopeless marriage situation.
  • Pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to work on your husband's heart.

God hates divorce.
